What's Stacked Beside the Bedside

Cover of the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick
I'm not sure that Dick is a great writer, but the book has a style that the movie Bladerunner avoids. Bladerunner to this day remains one of my favorite movies, and even Dick who died before it was finished was pleased with what Ridley Scott had produced. It's rare to find an author willing to say that about a film-adaptation of their novel. I think I would have liked Dick.

Cover of the book Rant

Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey - Chuck Palahniuk
I usually don't like Palahniuk. Fight Club remains one of the few books I've read where I signficantly enjoyed the movie more than the book. With Sam Rockwell starring, Choke could be the same, but I picked up Rant in a cruise ship's library because of the cover. Rabies are good, discourses on liminal existence are boring. "...me the picture of sweetness-and I had rabies. Courtesy of Buster Casey."

Cover of the book The Short Stories

The Short Stories - Ernest Hemingway
Giving Hemingway praise reminds me of when people talk about how much they love the Beatles. Still the majority of the stories are beautiful, and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is one of my favorite short stories of all time. The preface by the author at the beginning is only a page long, but tells more about Hemingway than any story. "...Francis Macomber found that, of all the many men that he had hated, he hated Robert Wilson the most."

Cover of the book The Love of the Last Tycoon

The Love of the Last Tycoon - F. Scott Fitzgerald
An unfinished fifth novel by Fitzgerald, only half of the book is written and the rest known through an outline. The novel takes place in Hollywood, and is most well-known for the film-executive protagonist Stahr, but the character Cecelia Brady is darkly hilarious in the sections that she narrates. "So it was rather hopeless. Emotionally, at least, people can't live by taking in each other's washing."
